Skincare is Self-Love

Hey Kaiso Tribe! It’s WEDNESDAYYYYYYYY! By the time you’re reading this Wednesday will be ending but Oh well! Last week I made a post about the different types of skin and how to identify your skin type! This week I’m diving right into how to care for the two major skin types. Dry and Oily skin. No matter what else is going on with your skin, you’re probably also dealing with skin that’s too dry or too oily. People that don’t have this problem this ain’t about you, just go read another post. Don’t be in here asking about if your skin isn’t oily or dry! Anyways, before we go any further I’d like to remind everyone that I AM NOT A DOCTOR, everything I know, I have learned through research and caring for my skin. That being said, let’s get into these skin care tips!

Regardless of your skin type, your skincare routine should follow these few basic steps. We will get into a more detailed routine for dry versus oily skin types later. It should also be noted, no matter what, when you’re done washing your skin you should immediately follow up with an oil based lotion. The three steps every skincare routine must have are;

1. Cleanse

2. Tone

3. Moisturize

For example, this is my daily skincare routine:

1. Cleanse with Heavenly Facial Cleanser; 2x daily, when I wake up and before I go to bed/shower.

2. Tone and deeply clean with a personalized facial toner.

3. Moisturize and protect against harmful UV rays with Nuts for Kukui.

Once weekly I use a facial mask to address any extra concerns that may pop up during the week. Sometimes I need extra acne fighting power or want a little hydration etc., and so doing a weekly mask is a great way to help enhance the effects of my daily routine.

You’ll notice that my skincare routine is the bare minimum even though I also have eczema and sensitive skin and allergies. When oily or dry isn’t your only concern with your skin then adding in more products to combat each issue is NOT THE STRAT! Especially if you have too dry skin, or sensitive skin. Let’s unpack this!

Dry Skin

I’ll start with dry skin. Dry skin and I are old friends. It has kept me awake many a nights. BUT I have never had to deal with dry facial skin. All the same I learned some golden rules to live by when you’re talking dry skin. Well just one really. MOISTURIZE! Oh my god. Get a good moisturizer, one that’s oil based and take it with you everywhere. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, go out without your lotion on you. Your skin will dry out as the day progresses, harsh weather, not hydrating enough, moisture sucking clothes, whatever it is, when you have dry skin, it doesn’t take much to tip you over the edge so you need to reapply as needed. Dry skin also hates hot water. This is a hard one for me, but using cooler water to shower and cleanse your face, goes a long way to help restore moisture. Someone with dry skin may want to skip the facial toner, in favor of a facial mist/hydrosol. Since you’ll need extra moisture, using a facial mist for step two; tone, is a good tweak to make for dry skin. Avoid exfoliating too often, and avoid products that contain alcohol, and you will be golden and glowing.

Oily Skin

Now oily skin is a whole other beast. When your skin is too oily you want to avoid using products that are heavy on oils. But you also need to be mindful of the cleanser you use! Most people tend to go with a heavy duty cleanser when they have oily skin, but then if you strip the skin too much then you force your skin to make MORE oils to compensate and that will obviously work against you! Instead get a gentle cleanser that uses all natural ingredients, like Heavenly Facial Cleanser, and use it to wash your face 2-3 times daily. If you sweat a lot then you’ll probably find your skin needing to be cleansed more often throughout the day anyways! The reason you’re washing more is to keep your pores clear, and since your skin is oilier than it needs to be, washing more often helps to keep oil build up to a minimum. For oily skin, I recommend adding an exfoliating step to the skincare routine. Cleanse, tone, exfoliate and then moisturize. Adding a facial scrub to your routine, 1-2x weekly, will help keep your pores clean and remove dead skin/oily build up.

And that’s really it y’all.

I personally keep my skincare routine simple because it’s easier to remember and do every day, it’s cheaper, and it makes my skin happier, and healthy!

You don’t need a product for every issue! Most of the issues you experience with your skin get better, if not go away, when you clean up your diet and drink more water! Shocking huh!? When building your skincare routine consider how you can build a healthier routine to care for your internal organs as well! This will greatly improve skin health. Not to mention you will feel better too! And of course remember that nothing happens over night!
